So you got a Netbook with Windows 7 Starter pre-installed and you're not that happy. Don't format that drive yet!

A good number of netbooks out in the market come with the most affordable and most basic edition of Windows 7. The truth is that a good number of these netbooks are more than capable of running the higher editions of Windows 7. Some people would quickly jump at the option of reformatting the dive C to do a clean install of their preferred edition - Windows 7 Home Premium, or Ultimate. But is this necessary?

Not at all! What do you stand to lose if you do a drastic thing such as reformatting Drive C? You can lose all those built-in tweaks by your Netbook OEM and you also have to spend that extra time re-installing all those utilities and bundled software.

A very good alternative is to get a more affordable upgrade for you Windows Starter and do the upgrade online. The upgade key is available at about $100 less than the full product price. Now, why upgrade instead of a full install? Well, Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade does not require physical media and installs the extra components of the Windows 7 edition from the Component-based servicing (CBS) store located on the system.

To upgrade to another version of Windows 7 you can purchase a license online, or you can enter a license key which can be purchased at retail. If you have a license for a boxed version of Windows (FPP or Full Packaged Product) you can use that for the upgrade process as well. It beats having to go through the extra process of reformatting and reinstalling from a DVD.

Upgrading othen Notebooks or Desktop PCs which come with Windows 7 pre-installed can also be upgraded to a higher edition of Windows 7 through the same process.

Well obviously there isn't any downgrade plans for Windows 7. But if you are not sure if your netbook running Windows 7 Starter can run the higher editions of Windows 7, you can always check out your WEI (Windows Experience Index). You will notice that the weakest link of your netbook is probably the CPU. If this thing hits a score of at least 2.3, and your unit comes with 2 GB of RAM, chances are you will still enjoy Aero and all other features even on your netbook.

Upgrade to another edition of Windows 7 by using Windows Anytime Upgrade wrote:

If you want more features than you currently have in your existing edition of Windows 7, you can upgrade to another edition using Windows Anytime Upgrade. Pricing information for each edition of Windows 7 is available as part of the Windows Anytime Upgrade process. You can also go to an electronics store to see prices and to buy a Windows Anytime Upgrade key.

Here's how to begin:

1.Open Windows Anytime Upgrade by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type anytime upgrade, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Anytime Upgrade.

2.Follow the instructions on each page.

When the upgrade is complete, you will have a new edition of Windows 7 running on your computer.
